joy is inward

"What we mean by cheerfulness is a circumstantial thing, an external thing. The proper New Testament word for cheerfulness is a word translated 'joy' and is a very different thing. Joy is inward; it does not depend upon outward circumstances and can exist at times when cheerfulness would be impossible."
